The metal world needs freshness and originality, in particular, power metal needs to renew its structures, used more and more. In their own the Danish metallers MANTICORA do this . Since the beginning of their career, they tried to move a step forward every time, year after year, notes after notes. Now the ultimate goal seems to be reached with the last ambitious album “The Black Circus part 2 – disclosure”, the follow-up and the completition of the last year release “The Black Circus Part 1 – Letters”. Now I have the chance to speak about the new album and all about “Manticora” universe with the vocalist Lars L. Larsen:

Hello Lars , I am Marco Tarda from Italy . Welcome to A DREAM IN STEEL webzine, nice to have some moments with you and asking some questions…now that the second chapter of “The Black Circus” is finally out , I can say that the result you reached is very good , probably a great goal not only for Manticora but also for new frontiers of power metal in 2007, an almost perfect balance between power , progressive , folk and thrash elements . About the style and solutions used in this new release , What's in your opinion the sides shining at best ?

Ciao Marco, I'd say that the overall atmosphere that we've created with this album (and also with part 1) is the absolute best side of things. I'd love for the fans to see the 2 albums as one, as it will give a new dimension to the listening of the albums, if you try to listen through all 90 minutes at once. Also the ability to really play together is making our albums better and better for the listeners. Nobody is standing out as the star of the band, but we are a unity that makes an overall strong picture of music.

Where did you get inspiration for the concept explained in “The Black Circus”? Where is this dark taste coming from ?

Mads came up with the concept a month after recording the “8 deadly Sins” album. In the beginning it was just a horror story that was loosely tied together. Then Kristian and I came with a lot of ideas – involving inspiration in HP Lovecraft and finally Mads and I reworked all the lyrics, adding the Lovecraftian atmosphere. It had to fit the music, and vice versa, so that's also why the music has become SO dark. However, we have always made dark music, and my guess is that it's all the darkness here up north in the fall/winter that makes us looking at things through a darker lens than usual, hehehe.

I think that the second part of “The Black Circus” is the most mature album you've ever done , but honest ly , where do put it in relation with your past releases?

I think it is our most ambitious work to date. I mean – to create a double album, which this really was intended to be, is really a big thing, and having to keep track of so many songs, both lyrics and music is ambitious. I can't say that I enjoy this album more than I did the 2 previous ones as they all have their own “life”, but it is unquestionably our biggest release to date.

I saw that in “The Black Circus…” you had the contribution of more than a Keyboard player, among them ANDREAS LINDAHL and FINN ZIERLER… but have you ever thought to search a permanent keyboard player ? Who's helping you on live show?

We have always had problems finding the right keyboard player. It seems that we create music much better without a keyboarder (then we add the keyboards afterwards), so we have worked with all these different people, including the ones you mentioned. Andreas used to go with us on tour, but these days we are using a guy here from Copenhagen , called Ronni Claesen. He also did some keys on the new album. He had his debut with us back in April, and since he's singing backing vocals as well, he's perfect for us.

What about future live shows? Have you planning something for a tour outside Denmark ? when will we see you in Italy ?

You will see us live in Italy on November 21 st as we have just recently been appointed official support band for the next King Diamond European tour…. The first 6 dates are confirmed, including a show in Alcatraz in Milano. I hope there will be another couple of shows in Italy on this tour, as we have a lot of fans down there. Maybe Roma or Firenze . As soon as we get the confirmation, it will be on www.manticora.dk Having said that, I also hope that some of the festivals in Italy will open their eyes soon and book the band, but it's of course a question of the fans, demanding this from the festivals.

Since the beginning of your experience with MANTICORA, I found you have a very particular voice. So-called “Reviewers” compare it to HANSI KURSCH (BLIND GUARDIAN) style. Now what's your point of view? Other sources of inspiration for your singing?

I don't think I sound like Hansi at all!!!!! He's much more raw than I am, and his range is (used to be) much wider than mine. My influences are: Bruce Dickinson, Russel Allen, James Hetfield, Warrel Dane and Erik A.K. + a lot of other great singers, but I also get goosebumps on my arms, when hearing Luciano Pavarotti singing “Nessun Dorma”. It is without question the most beautiful small piece of music in the world, and I have in my entire career tried to find this “Melancholia and sadness” that is so greatly exposed in music like that.

Now after over 15 years of career between FEAR IT SELF and MANTICORA, try to do a balance…what's the bad situations you had to face in the past and the better moments ?

The bad things: People that deceive you. This is the most disgusting business there is, where everyone are ready to stab you in the back to gain something for themselves, so one has to look out! It's all about money and not ideals. There are a lot of assholes that could learn something, but I guess it will never change. Call me naïve, but I tend to trust people too much…

Good moments: First album deal, first Euro tour, first show in the US ….do you get the picture? All first-time things are incredible, as all these things have been unobtainable targets that suddenly come true. It's not that great the second time around to play a venue or to sign a record deal, but then you tend to grasp the moment even more, when you do things the second time. It has been a long and hard ride to get where we are today, so the greatest thing is actually that we are still here and have never given up in spite of all the shit we have had to eat through the years….

Talking about your personal dreams and ambition, what ‘s the aim you ‘d want to obtain in the future with MANTICORA ?

It has always been my ultimate goal to be able to live off the music, so I'll aim for that still. I know that it's almost impossible today, but I'll still try. If you ask people that know me, then they'll tell you that I NEVER give up on a goal I have set for myself, so let's hope it happens some day. For the short-term future, we'll just settle with the King Diamond tour and see what it creates for us. It has to make further record sales and open the eyes of festival bookers.

To me MANTICORA with your fellows WUTHERING HEIGHTS are one of the best and original expression of a new way to play “Power metal” , and not only in Denmark … imagine to be speaking to young musicians who want to play heavy metal….some personal advices you would give to them to be “fresh” and “original” ?

No matter what people say to you about doing this or doing that, you should stay true to yourself and to your style. Of course it's ok to listen to advice, but don't let people change you. Whenever you feel that you are ready to record stuff and send to record labels, play on for another 6 months and get even better as the 1 st try is normally not good enough. It might seem a strange advice, but we all think that we are kings, when we are younger and it's hard to be objective on your own material in that age.

And what about your current music listening? …some new band you find interesting?

I am listening a lot to Raintime (Italian band), Darkane, Trivium and a new young Italian band called Pathosray. Of course I am also listening to the old masters: Symphony X, Bruce D, Nevermore, etc.

We are coming to the end of the interview, so as tradition, I give you the chance to say whatever you want to our readers. In the mid-time, thanks for taking the time to answer this questions …the last words of this interview are left to you, cheers Lars….

Hey "metalheads". Speriamo di vedervi al nostro concerto a Novembre... Noi saremo sicuramente lí !
